Welcome to Arizona Adventurers' web site.
Hi! My name is Lionel Hummel, the group's leader, and in the few years I've been involved, the one thing I've heard most often is that Arizona Adventurers is not your typical Jewish singles group. That's probably because first and foremost we're an all-volunteer Jewish outdoor club that just happens to draw many members from the local single population, not a singles group!
Arizona Adventurers began in 1986 as a phone tree of Jewish single friends who like to hike and go camping. Today it has evolved into a volunteer-run outdoor activities group with over a hundred members. We have a bi-monthly newsletter, a web site, and a variety of email lists to let you keep up with all of the exciting goings-on. We're mostly a 20- and 30-something crowd, but if you like and can participate in the activity, please feel welcome to join us! Our events are a place for old friends to gather, and for new Jewish friends to meet.
Our group is unique because we base our events on activities you'd enjoy doing even if they didn't happen to be with a Jewish group. How do we know what you like? Because all of our events are thought up by and planned by members like you! We do all sorts of activities: hiking, camping, kayaking, rock climbing, biking, softball, volleyball, skiing, frisbee golfing, spelunking (caving), and other outdoor stuff. We also have an occasional social gathering or two. Then there are our recent signature events, chances to experience the unusual: sky diving, white-water rafting, horseback riding, Hummer tours, Kartchner Caverns, and ballooning, to name a few.
After all that, if there's something missing that you'd like to do, there are certain to be others who would be happy to help you plan it. Or perhaps you have a special love for an activity that you'd like to share with others? Arizona Adventurers events can be easy and fun to lead, and what a great way to meet new people and to connect with others in the community! We have bi-monthly planning meeting happy hours where we think up activities for the coming months, and everyone's always welcome.
Our group dynamics change month to month and from event to event. We have events of all different sizes. They typically range in size from six (rock climbing) to sixty people or more (parties and happy hours). Because we do such a wide variety of things, you can choose those things that interest you most or that you have an interest in trying. Overall, we tend to see comparable numbers of men and women, but remember: When you're meeting new people with common interests and doing something you really enjoy anyway, it's never a waste of time.
We have a bi-monthly online newsletter that is available to members, describing all the events and containing useful information. And, our weekly announcements are a favorite among the young, hip, Jewish crowd all over town! The costs of the newsletter, mailing, web hosting, and advertising, are supported by you, our friends. All we ask is $5 per year for dues to cover administrative costs (i.e., this web site).
This year, come get more active and more involved in the Phoenix-area Jewish community with Arizona Adventurers!
